Humor in Light Verse

Jon Obermeyer
Dec 11, 2023

RIP Norman Lear, age 101, writer, creator, producer. Those Jewish mourning rituals inspired some light verse.

I Want My Friends

to come sit shiva,
but only true believers.
Bring some cannibis
sativa, bring liver-
wurst, pastrami,
mustard, dark rye,
the standard nosh;
tell a lie (or five)
about me, embellish
memory (say I was
loyal or funny).

Tear your t-shirt,
hide the mirrors;
empty my dishwasher,
quaff some beers;
codify my foibles
over the years.

Let there be snacks,
let there be laughter,
give a proper send-off
for the hereafter.
